Saccharimeter

The AUTOPOL 880 Series Automatic Saccharimeter is a dual wavelengthmicroprocessor based saccharimeter capable of measuring at both 589 nmand 880 nm. The 880 nm ICUMSA Approved near infrared wavelength allowsmeasurement of dark sugar factory juices‚ while the AUTOPOL AutomaticSaccharimeter Purity Mode allows simultaneous measurement and displayof PURITY‚ BRIX and POL. The AUTOPOL 589 Series AutomaticSaccharimeters provides the same features‚ measuring speed and accuracyof the AUTOPOL 880 but at the single wavelength of 589 nm.

Why Choose Rudolph Saccharimeters?
Rudolph Research Analytical knows Sugar Technologists around the worlddemand 24 hour operation‚ 7 days a week for up to 9 months out of theyear. They expect 0.02°Z reproducibility and accuracy. Rudolph Researchunderstands these demands and requirements‚ because Rudolph has beenserving the sugar industry since 1940. Throughout those sixty plusyears‚ Rudolph has dedicated itself to manufacturing qualityinstrumentation and providing superior technical and service support‚both directly and through its worldwide dealer network. The AUTOPOL 589 and AUTOPOL 880 provide 0.02 repeatability andaccuracy‚ time proven measurement technology and the critical featuresnecessary for today"s sugar analysis.

Dual Wavelengths
The most important feature of the AUTOPOL 880 is its ability to measureat two wavelengths: 589 nm and 880 nm (NIR). Select 589 nm forconventional analysis using chemical or lead clarifiers‚ or select 880nm for polarimetric sugar measurements in the near infrared NIR). 880nm is above the absorption level of most dark sugar factory solutionsallowing measurement of filtered but non chemically clarified juices.Using Whatman 91 filter paper‚ Manville Filter Cel Grade Celite‚ a 100mm cell and the proper technique‚ sugar solutions from crushed cane tomolasses and raffinate can be measured. Please refer to our applicationnote 910A.

Dilution and Cell Length Correction
Whether your sugar analysis requires a 100 mm or 200 mm cell‚ whetheryou use 1/2 normal (13g/100ml)‚ 1/4 normal (6.5g/100ml) or full weightsugar solutions‚ the AUTOPOL 589 and 880 provide the correct multiplierto display the reading as if the sample were prepared as a 1 normalsolution in a 200 mm optical pathlength cell.

Automatic Temperature Correction
The AUTOPOL 589 and 880 have a built-in temperature probe to measurethe temperature of the sample or quartz control plate being measured. The AUTOPOL 589 and 880 display the temperature source and type ofcorrection. Utilizing factory programmed temperature coefficients theAUTOPOL saccharimeters can make the following types of temperaturecorrections:

(1) A 30°C sucrose sample can be measured and corrected to 20°C or 27.5°C.

(2) A Quartz Plate measured at 25°C by the built-in temperature probe can be automatically corrected to 20°C.

Automatic Calibration
Calibrating the AUTOPOL 589 and AUTOPOL 880 is quick and simple. First‚place a Rudolph Quartz Control Plate calibration standard on theoptical rails and enter the Quartz Plate value in the appropriatewindow. Second‚ enter the temperature or use the temperature providedby the built-in temperature probe to correct the measurement to eitherthe ICUMSA standard temperature of 20°C or the Tropical referencetemperature of 27.5°C. Third‚ press 2 buttons and calibration iscomplete.

Purity Mode
Add a Rudolph J Series Refractometer to the AUTOPOL 880 or AUTOPOL 589and read BRIX‚ POL and PURITY simultaneously on the AUTOPOL AutomaticSaccharimeters 4x5 inch LCD backlit display.

Weight/Volume (Purity Mode)
Purity Mode allows the automatic determination of purity using anyweight volume combination possible. The Saccharimeter can have one typeof dilution and the Refractometer another‚ either way‚ the AUTOPOL 589and AUTOPOL 880 and will still provide the correct Purity Value basedon a 1 normal solution.

Weight/Weight (Purity Mode)
For sugar manufacturers who prefer to work on a weight/weight (wt/wt)basis or a combination of wt/wt and wt/vol.‚ the Purity Mode"s advancedsoftware will still provide an accurate Purity determination based on astandard normal solution.

Sample Specific Programs
The AUTOPOL 589 and 880 offer sample specific programs which can bepre-defined for specific juices. This capability is advantageous infactory environments where the same type of samples are repeatedlymeasured. These programs allow for input parameters such as:multiplier‚ wavelength‚ temperature correction to be prespecified.Enter into PURITY MODE and add a Refractometer and then dilution on aweight/weight or weight/volume basis can also be prespecified for eachsample name. Each program can be labeled with an alphanumeric andassigned to one of the function keys. The factory operator simplypresses the preassigned function key to start measurement.

I/O Configuration
The AUTOPOL 880 has one centronix parallel port and two serial ports. These ports are configurable in the "I/O Configuration" option of theSetup Menu‚ allowing simultaneous communication to a Refractometer‚printer and a remote PC or central database.

Print & Data Transmission Format
The printout below is an example of what can be generated by theAUTOPOL 880 Purity Option Software. This type of printout can be sentto a PC or a printer. The Purity‚ Saccharimeter and Refractometermeasurements can all be accessed and retrieved by a remote PC either byspecific key commands or on a time interval basis. Similar printoutscan be generated by the AUTOPOL 880 however‚ these printouts arelimited to the following parameters: sample name‚ tube lengthmultiplier‚ °Z value‚ date-time‚ wavelength‚ temperature correction‚range limits and statistical functions.

Definitions
The AUTOPOL 880 always displays Purity as if it were reading a 1 normalsolution as defined in SPS-1: 3.1 The "normal sugar solution" isdefined as 26.0160 g of pure sucrose weighed in vacuo and dissolved inwater at 20.00°C to a final volume to 100.000 cm3. This corresponds to26.000 g weighed in air under normal conditions (1013 mbar‚ 20°C‚ 50%relative humidity) and dissolved in water to a final volume of 100.000cm3 . Therefore‚ Rudolph displays:

%Sucrose
%Sucrose = °Z reading corrected for dilution Example: a 1/4 normal wt.solution reading 13.70°Z will read (4 x 13.70°Z) 54.80 %Sucrose.

%RDS-OP
%RDS-OP = Refractometer dissolved solids or Brix prior to dilutionExample: a 3:1 dilution having a refractometer Brix reading of 14.30would read 42.90 %RDS-OP (14.30 Brix x 3).

%PURITY
%PURITY = (%Sucrose / %RDS-OP) x 100 x apparent density polynomial

ICUMSA Specification and Standard SPS- 1 (1998) Polarimetry and the International Sugar Scale - Official
Excerpts from SPS-1 (1998) shown below describe Rudolph"s basis forcalibrating quartz and its Saccharimeters at 589 nm and 880 nm.

7.6 Use of quartz control plates in polarimeters with differentwavelengths. As outlined in Section 7.5‚ a quartz control plate has asugar value of 100°Z for a particular wavelength‚ if its rotation isequal to that of the normal sucrose solution at the same wavelength. The numerical values for the wavelengths used in practice are given in5.4. They are calculated from the value at the basic wavelength of546.2271 nm using equation (3) for the rotatory dispersion of sucrosesolutions. In addition the rotation values of a quartz plate must beknown for those wavelengths which are needed for its calibration. Usingexperimental data by Bunnagel and Oehring and the 22nd Session study 55the specific rotatory dispersion of a quartz for a wavelength in therange 546 - 900 nm is given by e quation (4). In determining theappropriate quartz plate value for a polarimeter operated at a nearinfrared wavelength‚ the wavelength of the particular light sourceemployed needs to be known.

Rudolph calibrates its Quartz at 880 using the above ICUMSA approved method and others upon request.
